Graeme needs to understand why the need for SALVO exists.

Graeme, you have to ask why there is not the large majority for independence that there should be, given the atrocities inflicted upon Scotland since 2014?

So here is a brief summary of SNP failures to explain to a colonised and exploited people that they have been colonised and exploited:

First, what investment has there been by the Scottish Government, supposedly the main independence party, in making the independence case?

Virtually no civil service time invested. In contrast, time and financial resources have been invested in identity politics particularly biologically denying sexual politics,

The sharp contrast between what Alba MPs say at Westminster on behalf of Scotland and what the SNP MPs do not say is stark.

The FM’s statement that she will work with the English Tory leader but not with other independence parties is ignominious. 

Her statement to Sky tv that her priority is maintaining the SNP in power and not independence is all revealing.

Ditto the failure to provide the promised household guide on independence. In contrast to Business for Scotland’s publications and the Wee Alba Blue Book.

The abject failure by SNP representatives on tv panel programmes to scotch the myth of GERS being beneficial to Scotland. Worse still, refusing the assistance of Professor Richard Murphy whose economic analysis of how GERS actually shafts Scotland.

So much could be added: the refusal to accept assistance from Mr Ballantyne with the ferry debacle, which matter whilst not about independence itself is a further nail in the coffin of Scottish people’s belief in themselves that they can run themselves efficiently. Of course msm is a hostile player that looks to misrepresent the Scottish Government even when it is doing better than its English counterpart, but this is all the more reason for political will and investment in publicising the case for independence. 

My personal experience as an SNP activist was one of frustration and surprise at the response of our SNP MP Alyn Smith (for whom I campaigned indefatigably, for my sins) when in 2019 I raised the issue of what the SNP was doing to make the case for independence. I listed all the circumstances and points that needed to be made to the Scots people, and that they were largely ignorant of the truth. I said that grass roots activity was important but transformational leadership was crucial.

Mr Smith’s response was to seek to flatter me by saying that he wasn’t surprised that an SNP activist was well informed –
and that he understood that some pensioners in the area had started a group for independence. This, Graeme, was the sum of Mr Smith’s reply, which of course ignored my key point what the Party itself would be doing, and the need for leadership.

In fact given SNP failures it’s amazing that support for independence has not plummeted. I suspect that it’s the horror show of Westminster that has kept pro indy support around 45-50%.

My conclusion is that, as post colonial theory and examples in Ireland, India
and elsewhere have shown, the main independence party becomes captured by the oppressor government, either by infiltration or comfy slippers collusion.

MY COMMENT

I fully understand where Joan is coming from. The examples she offers of SNP INACTION or missed opportunities could be multiplied many times over. Quite how the Sturgeon Leadership has transformed so many long standing SNP ACTIVISTS who devoted years of their lives and a great deal of money over the years to building the Party into folk that became so ashamed at what was allowed to develop and replace the drive for Independence in that Party is truly shameful. Fortunately many of these committed people have now joined Salvo and Liberation that are fully focussed on Independence and will not be diverted from that purpose not for other policy priorities or salaries.
