ITS ECONOMIC VANDALISM

Every day passes and politicians vacillate on introducing effective measures but continue to mouth the message that going over your doorstep leaves you wide open to serious infection.

Now I am no medical expert and of course it seems sensible to limit and reduce human contact whenever possible in the face of the pandemic but, and it is a huge but, that if you want to encourage future vaccinations by raising public fear and concern then it is necessary, vital,  to provide financial support to the hospitality industry as their jobs and businesses are being destroyed by that messaging.

You will not find a restaurant in Scotland that has not experienced a sharp rise in cancellations during the last couple of weeks and the last week has been a disaster. Apart from the very damaging crisis caused by cancellations, passing trade has also fallen off a cliff. Many restaurants are struggling to even attract a trickle of customers, this at a time when restaurants usually make the bulk of their profits in the financial year. The up to £6000 grant Sunak offered in England is hopelessly inadequate. as we await details of the Scottish package I would just point out that amount would barely cover last week’s cancellations at our small restaurant. We will probably have to close after Christmas until the restrictions are lifted. I think most businesses will do the same throwing many thousands out of work..

All this highlights Scotland’s powerlessness as a colony of England. Devolution is a total bust. The Scottish Government are powerless. I have no doubts they fully realize the truth of what I have written above. The problem is they are powerless to do anything about it. I cannot write that I have sympathy for Nicola Sturgeon because she has been a brake on progressing Scotland on the road to Independence. She is every bit as responsible for this disaster through that inability as Sunak, Johnston and those in charge in London.

People write about her ego and the power trip she enjoys. Let me tell you the picture of her scrambling about trying to grasp a few crumbs from Boris’s table does nothing to enhance her image and her ego is being severely dented. She needs to realize that even as Colonial Governor in Scotland her standing is dependent on two things. The first is the continual support of the Colonial power down South and that involves not rocking the boat too much, the second the hope that the Scottish people don’t discover the level of concession and compliance she is required  to make daily to hold on to the meagre powers devolution provides her. Powers that are slowly ebbing away as the English Government strip whole areas of responsibility away from Scotland’s Parliament with barely a whimper from the SNP. WHY? Because to highlight it, when you are powerless to stop it, damages her ego of being Nicola the All Powerful. Nicola the Spineless more like.

But back to the Covid measures, there is a complete lack of logic to all this. Keeping the schools open for instance provides a great environment for cross infection and a highway to elderly grandparents. Permitting 50,000 people to attend a football match, using all the public transport that involves, seems crazy when you are urging people to stay away from restaurants that will be operating track and trace, temperature checks, social distancing etc.

The thinking at the top of the Scottish Government seems badly at fault. Having been handed a golden chalice the only movement on Independence has been backward, increasingly the reputation for competence carefully established and nurtured under Alex Salmond has been squandered with incompetents like Humza Useless having destroyed Justice being moved to Health where the problems are only just beginning. Shirley Anne Shambles at Education is presiding of the chaos we all expected, this time with a sex survey that will cost a lot of SNP councillors their seats in May.

Sturgeon has her pals cabinet, she took measures to stop competent people like Joanna Cherry QC and Philappa Whitford returning to Holyrood from Westminster. Would that they were our Justice and Health Ministers today, but people of independent mind, no matter how capable and competent are not considered in case such talents could dim the star of the beloved “leader”. North Korea anyone?

Anyway, the cost of Scotland not becoming Independent becomes clearer by the day as does the madness in allowing the incompetents in London to exercise power over their colony in Scotland.

One day, the Independence Movement in Scotland will have a competent leader, driven by organization, passion and principle capable of inspiring our country to rise to that challenge of winning true freedom and lifting and shaking away the apathy and distrust which haunts our country today. It can’t come soon enough for me.
