NOW’S THE DAY

Well this is it folks. What we have all been working so hard for all these last weeks. Like most folk I have no solid evidence about what the outcome will be. We have put in a fantastic effort in our attempt to achieve what no political “expert” thinks possible.

To put this in perspective for all the SNP ULTRA ZEALOTS who don’t care about what is best for Scotland and our hopes to win our nations freedom, let me spell out the scale of the task we face.

We are a Party who are only into a few weeks campaigning. The vast bulk of our members, 95% plus joined in the last six weeks. We are attempting to win representation in a Parliament in record time.

Some history for you, the SNP was formed in 1934. It took 11 years to win the first seat in 1945 and they only held the Motherwell seat for a few months. It took a further 22 years to win another, Hamilton in 1967 with Winnie Ewing’s victory. For many years SNP elections in the late 70’s and 80’s involved winning one or two seats so anything Alba achieves in this election will be a remarkable triumph. We have every reason, everyone of us, to be extremely proud of the excellent campaign we managed to mount in such a short period. It has been magnificent.

We faced extreme hurdles being put in our way, a blanket ban, state censorship from the BBC. A virtually entirely hostile MSM who only mentioned ALBA when a negative spin could be applied. Our Party Leader, who once again demonstrated what an outstanding and capable politician he is, was subject to the most disgusting smearing and attempts to ignore the absolute fact that not a single allegation made against him was upheld when tested in court. The allegations each and every one, often made by his political opponents and friends and supporters of the First Minister, were dismissed by a jury and he was cleared of all charges. You would not have known about this as he was constantly bombarded by calls for him to apologise. What for? For being found innocent?

There should be an apology, lots of them, but to Alex Salmond from those responsible for their botched political plot. Their time will come when the outstanding court actions take place. Hiding the plot from the public will not survive the next round. Nor should it! Worrying times ahead for those responsible.

I hear encouraging reports from all over the country. I think and pray that we will overcome everything that has been thrown at us. When we do it will be the proudest moment in all my many years being involved in politics in Scotland. Greater even than the wonderful moments I shared with my friend Jim Sillars when in 1988 we overturned a almost 20,000 Labour majority recording a massive 33% swing from Labour to SNP to win the Govan seat with a 3554 majority. The Proclaimers were on that winning campaign then as well, hopefully we can do so again.

I have nothing more to say than to repeat my thanks and admiration for everybody who had fought on Alba’s side in this campaign. I recognise how difficult it has been for many leaving old loyalties behind but a Party built on principle and honesty is a better vehicle to take Scotland’s Independence forward than one that has sadly lost its way and is a pale shadow of the Party that I was so proud to support for the last thirty five years. . 

Let us hope we have pulled off the miracle because this country will be the better for it. Good fortune to us all.
