Farmed Salmon is only a small part of the wholesale rape of Scotland’s assets
The £2 billion industry marketed around the world as Scottish is virtually all owned by investors in Norway, Switzerland, Cyprus, Canada and other countries, according to a new analysis by campaigners.
As much as 99 per cent of caged salmon production from Scottish-branded companies operating along the west coast is controlled outwith Scotland, says Scottish Salmon Watch. Most of the industry is Norwegian, and one major parent company is registered in Jersey, an offshore tax haven.
The salmon industry simply reflects the utter lack of Scottish ownership of assets in its own backyard.
Oil, gas, hydro, wind who owns that? Who profits from that? Or what about whisky?. An absolutely monster export business. But who owns the lions share of the industry and who gets the benefit of the huge export trade?
And ship building. Even in something as home grown as that and something where Scotland was ahead of the game, we can’t even build two ferries. But why build them at home when you can build them and support jobs in Turkey.? But hang about, Scotland will be getting all the engineering jobs arising out of the offshore wind construction bonanza – things like jackets, wind blades, turbines and so on.
But no, take the huge SeaGreen windfarm off Fife. With 114 huge jackets required, 30 are being built in Dubai, whilst the other 84 are being built in China. Why build them here, create jobs here, when the kit can be built elsewhere.? And ditto the huge 84 metre blades which come from Denmark. And ditto the generation turbines where are they sourced? Not from Jockistan that’s for sure.
And so it goes on. A big quarry up near Oban. Deep water direct access. Has produced nearly a billion tonne of stone already demolishing a mountain. Few people actually know about it despite it exporting stone worldwide to places as far away as Texas. Set up by an Englishman in the name of Mr Foster of Foster Yeoman Aggregates its now owned by an international Swiss company.
Funny isn’t it you think of Scottish salmon being 99% foreign owned and quite quickly you can think about all the other things that are not Scottish owned? Peasants in our own land or would that be an unkind statement?
And our ports in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. Once owned by the people. Privatised by Mrs Thatcher. Who own them now? Don’t need to think too hard to know who its not. But I could go on. Scotland, a people, like the American Indians, sold glass beads. You couldn’t make it up.
MY COMMENTS
Willie only scratched the surface with this post but it’s more than enough to get my dander up. Tories will tell you it’s just market forces when in reality it’s a strictly manufactured fire sale where the true owners of the assets are denied the opportunities to exploit their own assets. It’s a political fix because have no doubt Westminster is happy for international conglomerates to own all these things, much preferable to being in Scottish control. A strong Scotland might prove to be a dangerous competitor whereas selling them off and maintaining a legislative minefield strictly controlled from London allows profits all round, except for the Scots of course. Wonder why none of this was highlighted during the 2014 Referendum, then think BBC and yes, our foreign owned media?
We have been put to sleep, the feelings that nobody can do anything about it are widespread and largely accepted. As long as this position is maintained Scotland is going nowhere. Does it need to be that way? No it doesn’t but we need to get off our backsides and Fightback. Electing effective politicians would help but nothing would do more than backing Salvo and Liberation and start educating Scots in the true nature of our colonial status and the penalties we are paying, every day, for tolerating it.
I am, as always
YOURS FOR SCOTLAND
BEAT THE CENSORS
Sadly some websites seek to censor what their readers have access to read. This is particularly true of sites whose existence is primarily to support the views of one particular party and they seek to block articles which do not slavishly support that particular doctrine. My readers have worked out that the best way to defeat that attack on the freedom of speech and thought is to share my articles widely, thus defeating any attempt at censorship. My thanks for this.
SALVO AND LIBERATION
Are playing a crucial role in taking Independence forward. This site limits donations to Yours for Scotland to a maximum of £3. We do not need more as all we seek to do is to cover the costs incurred in running the blog therefore once this is secured each year all further donations are forwarded to Salvo and Liberation. My thanks for all who choose to support us in this way. It is appreciated.
