“Alex Salmond stated in 2014 that he would respect the result of the referendum”
First of all, what was the real result of the referendum? The 45 yes vs 55 no is only the official result. But how accurate was it?
Now we also know that Scotland’s natives voted by 53% to independence, while those who came from the rest of the Uk voted by 72% to no. If you look at the franchise of any other country in Europe for constitutional matters, including the franchises of Gibraltar and the one of the Maldives, Scotland’s franchise in 2014 was a complete aberration. A referendum on independence is meant to be an exercise in self-determination. Indyref 2014 cannot be called an exercise in Scotland’s self determination when the vote of its native population was frustrated by the vote of settlers coming from the colonising power.
We also now know the ridiculous level of interference by the British state in that referendum. We now know that sectors of the UK civil service were involved in the matter “to save the union” and stopped short of campaigning. This is in direct contravention of their code of conduct that states they must behave with political impartiality. Well, you will agree that the perspective of “saving the union” is anything but politically impartial.
An additional form of interference was in the form of political parties with HQ in England and with representatives of English constituencies as leaders. What was the business of any of these people sticking their nose in a matter that is exclusively for Scotland?
We also know about the entry of money from entities outwith Scotland, into the no campaign? I include here the money raised by members of Labour, Tories and Libdems outwith Scotland. Money from members of England parties should have never been used to campaign to frustrate Scotland’s independence. This kind of interference would have been forbidden if the referendum had taken place in any other country.
Then, of course, we have the most outrageous and ridiculous levels of propaganda spouted by the BBC and other outlets. I have nothing to say about the other outlets, if they are privately owned. But in the case of the BBC, people are forced to pay for a licence, therefore I am not quite sure how you can interpret as lawful the national broadcaster using public money to send a biased political message.
Then of course we have the matter that the UK government, in this instance an external interest, also exercising a ridiculous level of interference. This was in the form of using UK money (money from England, Wales and NI) to pump up all sort of anti-independence propaganda in Scotland (I don’t remember ever being asked If I agreed for my taxes to be used to campaign against independence, do you?), to violate purdah, and to abuse their position of power to announce a vow, a litany of lies, a week before the referendum. This level of blatant interference would be considered as illegal in any democratic country.
Bizarrely, less than 8 months after the referendum, when according to the official narrative, the no vote had “won decisively” , Scotland handed 95% of its Westminster seats to the SNP and over 50% of the vote to pro-independence parties. Nicola Sturgeon, of course, capitulated to the British state when she removed the teeth of the SNP majority by claiming a vote for the SNP was not a vote for independence. Can you imagine if it had been?
So let me ask you again, what was the real result of the referendum in 2014?
“He lied”
The ones who lied are the unprincipled, undemocratic and corrupt British state politicians and their useful idiots in Scotland and elsewhere who told us things like “the way to remain in the EU is to vote to remain in the uK”, “lead not leave the UK”, “you will be voting for the permanence of Holyrood and its independence from Westminster in devolved matters”, “you will be voting for Devo Max, for Home Rule, for the form of federalism you can have when one of the countries has a bigger population than ours”.
THOSE are the ones who lied. Actually, the no vote is tied to what we were presented as status quo at the time of casting our vote. You destroy the status quo that supports that vote, you destroy the legitimacy of the vote.
Failing to deliver every single one of those promises and unilaterally and without our consent re-writing the Scotland Act AFTER we cast our vote for the status quo that Act was part of, destroys the status quo on which the vote was sitting and therefore invalidates the referendum result. If you go to purchase a car under certain specifications, and what you are given is something completely different to what you pay for, the contractual agreement you have with the seller becomes void. Well, so did ours.
Now, who was and has been lying to us since 18th September 2014? Here is a clue: it is not Mr Salmond.
“I’m quite happy with the Brexit result as I voted Leave”
Fabulous. If you are happy for 38% of the voters to impose their will on the remaining 62%, then by logic, you will not have any problem either for the 45% to impose their will on the other 55%. Why should you?
“What about the TWO MILLION who voted ‘No’?”
What about them? You just said above you are happy with the will of the minority to be imposed on the majority.
“There is no accommodation for them in his statement”
An why should there be one? Where has been the accommodation for the 62% in Scotland who refused consent for the UK to exit the EU since 2016? What makes you think no voters deserve any more consideration than the 62% in Scotland who voted to remain in the EU?
MY COMMENTS
There is no doubt what happened in the 2014 Referendum could not have occurred in any other European country. All outlined above by Mia would have been illegal under the rules that operate everywhere else other than the UK. It can be argued we didn’t know better back then but that excuse holds no water this time round. Our elected members better pay attention because if they fail to deliver a level playing field this time then they should prepare for life out-with Parliament, because there will be few survivors, if any, if they blow it again.
I am, as always

BEAT THE CENSOR
Sadly some websites that claim to be pro Indy have turned out to be only Pro SNP sites and have sought to ban any websites that dare to question SNP Policy or tactics. They seek to avoid the public being aware that alternatives to waiting for Westminster to “grant” Scotland a Section 30 to hold a referendum exist. Issues like the flawed franchise, the Claim of Right route, the work of the SSRG and Salvo fill them with dread. As this blog promotes all routes, including alternatives I am banned from these sites and am therefore very grateful to my readers, who knowing about these efforts to ban and suppress go out of their way to subscribe and to share my articles far and wide. It is a good thing that attempts to restrict free speech and censor are defeated in this way.

SALVO
Now that Salvo has been launched it needs everybody to join and get behind this important, vital even, development. I have never encouraged readers to donate to Yours for Scotland indeed I operate a limit that even when people are overcome and demand the ability to donate I operate a strict limit of £3 per donation. I said that any excess to the costs of running this site would go to worthy Yes events. I have made some donations in the past but yesterday I gave a three figure sum to Salvo. I want to do more so while I am keeping, at this stage, the maximum donation to £3 I am now encouraging readers of Yours for Scotland to donate regularly with the assurance that every penny raised, over the running costs of this site, will be donated to Salvo. Salvo is a people’s movement and it needs us, the people of Scotland, to give them the funds they need. Thank you.
