He sat alone. He was cold. The house he lived in was damp. Poverty, his poverty, caused the open fire to remain unlit.
He lit the remains of a candle, and began to gather his thoughts.
First to emerge were the words, many drawn from the work of others, but as he wrote they became his.
Then came the melody, his words captured forever in a song.
He did not know, indeed he would never know in his lifetime, how far his words and his song might travel.
How many would eventually learn his words, and sing his song?
Today, as 2022 draws to its conclusion, we know the answer.
His words, his song, would find a home in every country of the world.

Tomorrow I will post the version of “Auld Lang Syne” sung by the Indy Choir at their rehearsal in Edinburgh.
It will be there if you decide to share it with your families and friends who live elsewhere in the world.
After you hear the Indy Choir, I hope you will. Share a song and words from Scotland and using the technology we have – sing and join hands with them.
It could however be a long day to reach the 20 million Scottish diaspora. For those you know in New Zealand – be early! For those in Europe – a bit closer perhaps, but for those in British Colombia or San Francisco – be patient (and stay awake!)

(Personal comment):
Put simply, one of the sources of inspiration that led to the creation of the “Declaration of a Sovereign Scot” relates to the works of Rabbie Burns.
As we remember our past, we need to find ALL the ways we can to create – the future of, and the future for, our country. A Scotland where we, together, regain its independence.
I hope that over time the Declaration initiative will prove to be ONE of such ways. Stage 1 involves reaching out to the world, with further Stages to follow. The open invitation for all Sovereign Scots to participate will continue.
