Jill Stephenson says that Scotland not joining the EU would mean being cast adrift in a cold and lonely world. She should check out Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Iceland, the EFTA member countries who are doing very well outside the EU.
She implies that Scotland wouldn’t qualify for EU membership should it seek it post-independence, because it wouldn’t meet the currency, deficit and lender of last resort requirements.
First, Scotland will have its own currency and central bank, just like any other normal sovereign nation. Otherwise, it wouldn’t control its economy, England would, and that’s the colonial status quo, not independence.
Second, England has imposed a deficit on Scotland by dumping onto Scotland billions of UK costs for English infrastructure projects, nuclear weapons and UK debt servicing. If Scotland were such a burden on the UK, we would have been ejected long ago.
Third, regarding lender of last resort, Ms Stephenson doesn’t understand that the European Central Bank and the national central banks of euro area countries share that role. But that applies only to member states using the Euro, not to the seven who don’t.
Finally, if being in the UK is so advantageous, consider this. Scotland, with a population of 5.1 million, generates enough electricity for 25 million citizens daily which is cabled to England and then sold back to Scots who are charged the highest prices in Europe to use their own energy.
Scotland’s sole political priority should be to stop the plunder by ending the union.

BEAT THE CENSORS
Sadly some websites seek to censor what their readers have access to read. This is particularly true of sites whose existence is primarily to support the views of one particular party and they seek to block articles which do not slavishly support that particular doctrine. My readers have worked out that the best way to defeat that attack on the freedom of speech and thought is to share my articles widely, thus defeating any attempt at censorship. My thanks for this.
SALVO AND LIBERATION
Are playing a crucial role in taking Independence forward. This site limits donations to Yours for Scotland to a maximum of £3. We do not need more as all we seek to do is to cover the costs incurred in running the blog therefore once this is secured each year all further donations are forwarded to Salvo and Liberation. My thanks for all who choose to support us in this way. It is appreciated.
