SCOTTISH POLITICS..THE MYSTERY

I have been doing my best to have a rest from my blog and Twitter for the last few days but I visited today for a brief look at what was going on. I was not happy with what I found.

I came across various folk all having a go at Salvo and Sara Salyers. Both Salvo and Sara was variously accused of being racist, anti working class, aloof and wasting everybody’s time with documents from centuries ago.

Liberation.Scot was accused of having too many people who did not live all the year round in Scotland on its steering committee and appointing members to the Scottish National Congress when it was supposed to be a “People’s Congress”

Where to start?

Let me start with Salvo and Sara Salyers. As if by magic the Claim of Right and Salvo now finds itself very much at the forefront of Scotland’s battle for Independence. It did not exist as an organisation until we were well into 2022. Since then many thousands have joined, Salvo hubs are being created throughout the country, campaigning materials are being designed and prepared for major campaigning beginning in 2023 and a whole range of innovative and novel campaigning tactics are now very close to being launched.

As for Sara I have never come across anyone in Scottish politics who puts in the level of work, research, chairing meetings, organising, speaking at meetings all over the country including SNP branch meetings, Alba meetings, Yes Groups, indeed any meeting where she can promote the significance of the Claim of Right. She is run off her feet and it angers me greatly that misinformed people seek to devalue her outstanding efforts in this way. I know it is only a few but it is draining on people who are putting in huge effort. I ask readers to have no time for those who seek to knock and devalue. Be sharp, let them know their attacks are not welcome.

Does it matter a whit? Of course it does it is crucial. Sara has researched and provided the hard evidence that England has no right to our oil and gas. That it has no right to sell off our renewable energy resources for a fraction of their true value. That Scotland is being plundered by a colonial oppressor. As Scotland freezes this winter that is a potentially HUGE MESSAGE.

I have had the pleasure of working closely with Sara and many Salvo members over most of 2022 and to call Sara or any of them racist is plain ridiculous. While I am at it can I point out, as Sara has numerous times, that Salvo is strictly non Party and while it includes people from the SNP, Alba, Green Party, ISP and other people from other political parties the majority of members are non Party belonging to no Party whatsoever. Now some in the SNP in particular like to paint to Alba as pulling Salvo’s strings. This has no truth but it is being said to encourage SNP members not to join Liberation or Salvo. It is just rubbish indeed it has been with Alba in recent times that Salvo was suffering attacks from. Fortunately Neale Hanvey has been a calming influence and everyone has moved on but the current policy position of Alba believing sovereignty is held by Scotland’s elected members, rather than the Scottish people themselves, is clearly at major odds with the Salvo position.

Until now we’ve previously taken the high ground –  rather than defend ourselves – because so much of the movement for Scottish self determination has become addicted to conflict for its own sake, like a scorpion stinging itself to death. But the goal here is too important to allow attention seekers, empire builders and personal egos to undermine it. 

Let me turn now to the complaints about Liberation.Scot and the Steering Committee of the Scottish National Congress. This is a small group of extremely talented people, many with International contacts and experience, all dedicated to furthering Independence for Scotland. They give of their time freely expecting no reward indeed they were all told at the outset that they will not be members of the Scottish National Congress unless they are successful in the ballot in the same way as any other ordinary Liberation member who applies. It will be a truly People’s Congress.

Let us look at the jibes. “Too many live, at least part of the year out with Scotland” my first question would be define “too many”? Now that creates problems for those whose contribution is to carp and whine on the sidelines. You see they don’t know who these members are, yes they know some but not all. I would remind readers that what the SNC main task is going to be is preparing and agreeing Scotland’s case for presentation to one of the main UN committees. It seems self evident that with such an international responsibility it makes a lot of sense to involve some people living in other UN COUNTRIES to be involved in the process.The majority of the Committee live full time in Scotland.

They are also there designing the application form for applying to become a Scottish National Congress member. No small task as we seek to make it  representative of Scotland making it truly representative in terms of sex, region, employment, age and a host of other considerations. The ballot will seek to balance all these factors fairly. There will be a small number of appointed representatives from Councils, Political parties, trade unions, community organisations etc. these groups all together will not amount to more than 20% of the membership and will have, in some cases, restricted voting rights.They will also have to rotate on the same timescale as other Congress members.

The new Liberation.Scot website will be launched in January 2023 and the application form will become available for people to start applying to be members of the Congress.Appointments will be for a fixed period initially of two years but no re appointment will be possible. The objective is to build progress not careers.

It is one of the great weaknesses of Scottish politics that there is a certain section whose main involvement is to overload on negativity and they seek, even when an organisation is not an electoral rival, to pull down and deride whatever they are doing. It is pretty juvenile in that they actually cost their own Party potential support in elections as Salvo and Liberation members will not take kindly to such attacks. We are a movement, not a political rival, you will not find us on any ballot paper.

Does that matter? I think so the Salvo/ Liberation Movement already has a membership bigger than most of Scotland’s political parties and is growing steadily even before we launch our membership drives seriously during 2023. We are also organising our Salvo campaigning arm across the country of which much more later.

We have no interest or time to get involved in negative argument. As an organisation we will be attacking nobody other than the Union. That is our target. We will not be distracted by other policy considerations or disputes. I hope every Scot recognises that and joins with us as we get Scotland moving forward in the most positive fashion.

We have a very powerful and positive message. It converts people from No to Yes when they find out the truth of how Scotland has been bullied and oppressed while our resources are plundered daily. With many Scots facing growing poverty as the cost of living mounts we have the potential to see our membership explode.Many people are much happier joining non Party Liberation, than any political party. We must use that advantage to build YES support.

Be part of it. There is so much more that we can do if we get the people motivated to fight back. We CAN do this!

BEAT THE CENSORS

Unfortunately some pro Indy websites are not pro Indy. They are pro SNP sites and ban any content on their sites which dares to question the SNP or the SNP leader.
