ALBA’s Neale Hanvey reveals Scottish Government’s fake independence promise
Speaking at a Yes 2 independence rally in Kirkcaldy, today, Alba Party’s Westminster Group Leader Neale Hanvey MP revealed that a source in the SNP told him that in a rare meeting of the Westminster SNP group, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon gave a commitment to SNP MP Angus Brendan McNeil that he could have his long avoided Plan B debate at the SNP conference in 2024.
The commitment is at odds with Sturgeon’s position that there will be a referendum in 2023 despite the Scottish Government still failing to secure agreement with the UK Government to enable that, or bring forward a bill to the Scottish parliament to progress with a referendum.
The Scottish Government is also yet to publish an updated white paper on the case for independence.
Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil had backed former SNP Depute contender and now Alba Party General Secretary Chris McEleny when he had attempted to have a debate on the so called Plan B route to independence at the SNP Conference in 2019. The pair wanted to use an election as a mandate to enter into independence negotiations if Boris Johnson successfully blocked a referendum on Scottish independence.
Whilst attempting to have the matter debated at the SNPs annual conference in 2019, SNP party staff members and parliamentarians were positioned to boo Mr McEleny and his efforts resulted in an overwhelming vote against having a debate on the matter.
Speaking after the Kirkcaldy independence rally, ALBA’s Neale Hanvey MP said:
“Scotland‘s future recovery and prosperity rests on the possibilities and potential that independence will bring, and Nicola Sturgeon has told Scotland that she intends to hold on a second independence referendum in 2023.
“However, a growing number of people no longer believe her word given the many previous false starts. And what this revelation demonstrates is that she has neither the political will or the self-confidence to deliver on her own promises.
“If she was taking independence remotely seriously then the long avoided debate on alternative routes would have been on the agenda long ago.
“By promising that such a discussion will take place in 2024 issues a stark warning that she’s just not serious about her referendum promise at all.
“The ALBA party see independence as an urgent and pressing need for Scotland. As the cost-of-living crisis quickly spins out of control into a cost-of-living catastrophe, Scotland’s independence can’t come soon enough.
“It is absurd that the SNP are putting off any discussion about alternative routes to independence until long after the supposed referendum has taken place. This is either utter contempt for the independence movement or an indication of strategic incompetence from a hapless leadership lurching from one calamity to another.”
Mr Hanvey also spoke about the SNP‘s alleged plans for the next Westminster vote
“Friends in the local SNP have told me that the First Minster has personally handpicked a candidate to stand against me without consulting the local branch. This shows no respect for the membership or local democracy.
But it makes clear to people in Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, they can either vote for someone who is serious about independence and will stand up for their rights consistently or they can vote for someone who will just roll over for Nicola Sturgeon time and time again.”
BEAT THE CENSORS
Sadly some sites had given up on being pro Indy sites and have decided to become merely pro SNP sites where any criticism of the Party Leader or opposition to the latest policy extremes, results in censorship being applied. This, in the rather over optimistic belief that this will suppress public discussion on such topics. My regular readers have expertly worked out that by regularly sharing articles on this site defeats that censorship and makes it all rather pointless. I really do appreciate such support and free speech in Scotland is remaining unaffected by their juvenile censorship. Indeed it is has become a symptom of weakness and guilt. Quite encouraging really.
